Sanofi STEM Youth Challenge: The Air We Share
Sanofi and ASTC invite applications from science centers and museums (SCMs) in the United States to implement a youth challenge for high school students on air and respiratory health, as part of The Air We Share, a partnership between Sanofi and ASTC’s Seeding Action initiative.

Applications are open for organizations to host a 2-day “hackathon” event in conjunction with the national challenge. Find more information about this opportunity in the Request for Proposals.

Please note that organizations must be (or plan to become) ASTC members and must be located in one of the following US Census Bureau divisions: Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central, South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central, West, and Pacific.

For all narrative questions, we request that you keep the length under 500 words.
What outcomes do you hope to achieve for your organization and community by participating in the Sanofi STEM Challenge?
Please describe the aspects of respiratory health that are particularly important for your community. This could include things like local sources of air pollution, rates of respiratory disease, interests or concerns expressed by your community, etc.
Please provide an estimate of the number of students you expect to participate in the challenge at your organization. Awarded organizations are expected to recruit a minimum of 50 student participants.
Describe the approach you might take to recruit student participants: What partnerships, channels, or programs might you leverage to recruit the number of students you estimated above? What approaches would you take to prioritize diversity and accessibility to youth from historically undersupported communities?
Describe how you might identify and recruit approximately 3 local judges for the challenge that you host. An ideal panel of judges will include diversity of expertise, identities, and experience. Please note that ASTC will provide further guidance and support for identifying and recruiting judges; for now, we’re interested in your initial thoughts about an approach. Are there individuals or organizations that you already have a relationship with, or that you are aware of that you may want to pursue?
Budget

For the budget question below, please download, fill, and reupload The Sanofi Youth Challenge Budget Template. You may request up to $30,000 in funding. Project budgets must include:
- Staff time
- Consultant/partner costs
- Materials
- Other event costs
Please do not include the fixed costs for judge honoraria or prize funds in your budget. Each organization selected will automatically receive $2,750 to cover those expenses.

This could include information about your previous work with high-school aged students, work related to air pollution and/or respiratory health, the experience and expertise of your museum’s staff, local partnerships that would enhance recruitment or content delivery, or facilities (including any spaces or tools you may use to support the challenge).
